MAY 19 2008
hello everyone,
firstly, i want to thank you for your support this year, it's been a great experience and a lot of fun and i hope to continue to be involved in wdcv as long as i can. i hope you've enjoyed listening to my show as much as i've enjoyed putting it together and broadcasting it, as cliche as that sounds.
anyways, i've been thinking a lot about the future of the show, as far as next semester. i think i'm going to drop the themed-show theme. it's been a good challenge but i also feel that it's very limiting, and there are a lot of explorations i'd like to make without having to worry about things fitting in or not fitting in or whatever. the result is going to be a show with a lot more variety every show, rather than over the course of the entire semester, and i'll also get to play a lot of things that i want to and can't necessarily fit into a theme. that's something i'm really excited about because oh man do i have some awesome music to pull from. i also think that it'll make for a more organic and sincere show--it'll be what i genuinely want to play and listen to and what i want you all to listen to as well. often when i was making the themed shows i felt really limited and like i was searching for songs to fit in. and i mean, i think themes will probably come out organically--if i want to play a lot of songs about friendships or a lot of twee that week or whatever--but ultimately i think having an anarchic rather than a structured format will produce a stronger and truer product.
obviously i've put a lot of thought into this decision, so please nobody be disappointed. it won't be all that different in the end, and it'll most likely be better. i haven't decided yet whether i'm going to keep the same name or pick a new one--having a new name would mean moving a lot of stuff, like this website, the facebook group, etc--but that might also be a good thing, and it would also be an artistic clean slate which is kind of what i might need. plus i have a very sweet name i want to use. it's a pun. i'll warn you about that right now.
so that's my announcement. i hope everyone's summers are awesome and you have time to listen to some great music. i've been getting into a lot of world music and old jazz and swing lately. i'm in love with django reinhardt. also i've been listening to a lot of punk rock again which is lovely. i'm hoping over the summer i can go to a lot of shows and meet a lot of new bands as well--and if so, i'm sure you'll hear about them.
i have a wonderful extended summer mix i'll put up here for you in a few days to tide you over until september, but i can't post it right yet. instead i will leave you with this:

title: greatest story
when they were young, the world had not yet collapsed. it was poised on the edge, not falling but not on safe ground.. just looking at the long fall ahead and waiting for it to happen. the threat of war loomed in the back of everyone's minds like an unpleasant shadow in the corner. but still, they were young, and optimistic, and off to find what life might have in store for them.
-THE WORLD/INFERNO FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY peter lorre
-THE FALL live at the witch trials
-MOS DEF boogie man song
-BIG D & THE KIDS TABLE checklist
-BRIAN DEWAN jimmy carter says yes!
he had spent his entire life in teh country until today. all the noise, the concrete, the crowds, the lights, it was being trapped in a giant pinball machine. it was overwhelming. it was mystifying. it was exhilarating. and once he met her--a wide-eyed artist with bold ideas and bold friends, with whom everything was magnificent--once he met her, he knew he would never be the same.
-THE OLD CEREMONY ole
-MON COTE PUNK killer king
-ELLA FITZGERALD let's face the music and dance
-MANDRAGORA TANGO ORCHESTRA besame much
it was a whirlwind romance that lasted all of two months. they each swore nothing would ever come between them, that they would love one another forever. then the war came, and the letter that pulled him away. "you have been called. you are a new hero, and it is time to serve your country." in a few weeks, he was on a boat and gone, as quickly as he had arrived. full of rage and haunted by his ghost, she too left, seeking the solace of the great american road
-PASCAL COMELADE brand new cadillac
-AGAINST ME! extra track (from the acoustic ep)
-MISCHIEF BREW lighting knock the power out
-PIXIES oh my golly!
after wandering without direction, she fell in with a group of revolutionaries who felt, as most revolutionaries are prone to do, that the war was wrong, the government was taking over, and the only responsible thing to do was to take the country back by themselves.
-THE WORLD/INFERNO FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY ich erinnere mich an die weimarer republik
-GOGOL BORDELLO santa marinella
-THIS BIKE IS A PIPE BOMB we shall not be moved
-DEFIANCE, OHIO promises
things quickly spiraled out of control as the war got worse and worse, and the group more and more radical. when she woke up one morning in a street full of broken glass and empty of people, it was too late. it was too much and it was all for nothing. it was time to go home. sorting through months of male, one letter--starkly white--fell out of the pile. it was dated five weeks prior, and it said in flat terms that he had been lost and presumed dead.
INTERMISSION
bereft of his love, he had volunteered for the most dangerous missions, sure he would never see her again. he seemed to have a cursed good luck until one night, he was captured and taken behind enemy lines.
-DANIEL JOHNSTON desperate man blues
-BANDITS OF THE ACOUSTIC REVOLUTION it's a wonderful life
-SECRET CHIEFS 3 the electrotheonic grail dove
-FRANK SINATRA they can't take that away from me
things seemed the worst they had ever been. he spent some time wondering how this had all happened to him, and then spent some time not thinking at all, waiting for the end. but at some point.. at some point, by some miracle, he remembered her--her smile, her eyes, everything he loved about her. every reason why he was alive. and he knew that this could not be the end--he couldn't die with out her. he had to do all he could to escape, to get back to her. but when he showed up at her door, he was met only by shock and confusion. so much was changed forever.. so much had come between them. and they did not know what was stronger: love, or despair.
-CASABLANCA SOUNDTRACK lazslo/airplane
-PETULA CLARK conversations in the wind
-ALLEN GINSBERG the sunflower sutra
-TED LEO & THE PHARMACISTS tell balgeary, balgury is dead
years later, the war is over and the world has moved on without them. yet they have peace and love in each other. the heart may be fragile--it may be beat, or broken, or lost, but it is eternal and invincible.
-THE DECEMEBRISTS grace cathedral hill
